Book Reviews: Not A Fan by Kyle Idleman

Many people claim to love Jesus yet they are not a follow of Him. How many of our churches are filled with people who are just there to be a spectator instead of a growing disciple? If you asked the average person if they were a fan of Jesus most would say yes, but if you asked are you a follower of Jesus, some will give a different response.

Not A Fan by Kyle Idleman is a book that addresses the issue of being a more committed follower of Jesus rather than a fan. Fans, such as those in the sports world, follow their favorite athlete, but they only know stats of their players and some of their history. Committed followers of Jesus follow him when it costs us everything we have and even all that we are.

Idleman goes through a few chapters asking honest questions to help give us a self check-up to determine if we are followers or just fans. Then Idleman talks about the invitation Jesus gives to deny yourself and take up your cross to follow Jesus. There are some church leaders that will not address this issue because it's not about themselves or the people they serve, but about Jesus. The final three chapters talks about our commitment to follow Jesus whereever, whenever, and whatever He has called us to do.

Not A Fan is a book that has many Christians reading because it does address the issue of following Jesus in a modern form. This book is an easy read with some humor as well as some honesty from Idleman himself. This is a good book for teens to read because they can identify with the hype of being a fan.

Thanks Zondervan for letting me review this book.
