Focus on Jesus, Kill the Flesh

In Colossians 3:1-4, we are told to set our minds on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Throughout the Christian life, we have many things in this world that can distract us from being faithful to God. Let's face it: this world has many beautiful things to offer, but many of those beautiful things are outside the will of God.

In Colossians 3:5-8, we are told to "put to death" what is earthly in us. The list consists of "sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desires, and covetousness, which is idolatry." The words "put to death" in the original language is "mortify." Paul is saying, Kill what is earthly in you. Kill your flesh. Kill what is keeping your minds off the things above.

If I had to sum up Colossians 3:1-8 in a few words, it would be: "Focus on Jesus, kill the flesh."
