Book Review: Covenantal Apologetics by K. Scott Oliphint

Apologetics is simply the defense of Christianity. For the past few years there have been more apologetic books coming out than the previous 10 years. Christianity is being attacked not only from those outside the faith but also those from within. What is even scarier is that some Christians do not know what they believe in. They attend church, hear a sermon, and be on their way.

1 Peter 3:15 says that we should always be ready to make a defense to anyone who asks us why we believe what we believe. The sad truth is most Christians think it is only the pastor's job to make such a defense which the Bible says, the job of pastors is to equip the saints from ministry (see Ephesians 4:11-12). Another sad truth is that most pastors do not even equip their people for ministry nor the church's teaching ministry is equipping people with what Christianity is all about. What makes my point more interesting is that is how Scott Oliphint starts off his book, Covenantal Apologetics, which deals with apologetics from Reformed Theology, which many have not been written over the last few years.

Oliphint says that Christians must be ready to make their case as to why Christianity is true. One truth he stresses out is that "The lordship of Christ is basic to our defense of Christianity" (pg. 35). The fact that Jesus is Lord has made people outside the faith attack Christianity. One of the things that Christians must be equipped for is the lordship of Christ.

The rest of the book deals with what is the lordship of Christ and how we are to defend our faith. This is what makes this book so great, it not only gives us theology truth, but also practical truth on how we can win outsiders to the Lord. This was a challenging book to read. Okay, it was also a challenge to write a review for as well. I highly recommend this book.

Thanks Crossway for letting me review this book.
