Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law (Psalm 119:18).
'Wondrous things' in Scripture are those mysteries of divine truth, wisdom, and grace that are revealed and contained there, especially as they relate to Jesus Christ.
The Psalmist's prayer teaches us three things about these 'wondrous things.'
1. They are recorded or laid up for us in Scripture and nowhere else. Scripture is the treasure chest of these 'wondrous things.'
2. It is our duty to discover them and to understand them.
3. Without divine help we are utterly unable to discover them. By his prayer, the Psalmist teaches us not to trust in our own wisdom, but to acknowledge that it is the special work of God by his Spirit to enable us to understand the mind and will as revealed in Scripture.
The Psalmist's prayer shows the work of God that is needed to enable us to discern and understand the wonderful effects of divine wisdom treasured up in Scripture. It is the 'opening of our eyes.'
