The ultimate work of our sanctification is to look at Christ more and more for our own sense of self, as our hope even in our effort. John Berridge reminds us: "If we would be holy, we must get to the cross and dwell there; else notwithstanding all our labour and diligence, and fasting and praying, and good works, we shall yet be void of real sanctification..."
