A few years ago, John Piper wrote a book called Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came To Die using 50 short and simple chapter to reflect on the purpose for the death of Jesus. Many churches hand it out around Easter time so the people can meditate on why Jesus truly came. While there have been many books on the death and resurrection of Christ, which is the most important event in human history Christians should always celebrate, there have not been many books reflecting on the Incarnation.
The Incarnation is when Jesus, who is God, became a man. We believe that Jesus was born of a virgin and lived a perfect life. Joel R. Beeke and William Boekestein have written a book that is appropriate for reflecting on the Incarnation just in time for the Christmas season called, Why Christ Came: 31 Meditations on the Incarnation. This book takes a theological approach on the Incarnation in a way that those who are new believers can read without feeling it is over their heads.
Each chapter contains Biblical truth on the Incarnation such as Jesus came to save sinners, to do the will of the Father, preach the gospel, and call sinners to repentance. The chapters are not long which makes this an appropriate book to read in the month of December as we begin to celebrate the birth of Christ. Even though Jesus never commanded us to remember his birth, it is important we do because this is the gospel. The gospel is about God becoming a man to live the life we could not live and died the death we deserved.
It is important for Christian to reflect on the Incarnation for that was God's plan in the beginning to redeem mankind from their sins. That is why I am happy to recommend this book. I encourage churches to get this book for their congregations so they may spend the month of December reading on why God became a man and praising Him for His mighty work on the cross.
Thanks Reformation Heritage Books for letting me review this book.
