In Genesis 3, we witness the fall of man and God's judgment on them which resulted in Adam and Eve being kicked out the garden of Eden. Even though our parents sinned against God, he showed he still cared for them by making garments of skin:
And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them (Genesis 3:21).
This is good news for us for a couple of reasons. First, if you are in Christ, meaning if you are in union with Jesus, God does not kick you out of the kingdom just because you sinned. All Christians still struggle with sin. That is why we can have assurance when we go to God and ask for forgiveness, he will cleanse us. 1 John 1:9 tells us, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." John tells a couple of verses later, "But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world" (1 John 2:1-2). Jesus speaks on our behalf before the Father as a defense attorney speaks before a judge. Romans 8 tells us we are not, in Christ, under condemnation and nothing separates us from the love of Christ.
Second, we also see a foreshadowing of the death of Jesus because God provided a sacrifice of an animal in order for Adam and Eve to have those skins so they can cover their shame. God through Moses institutes the Jewish sacrificial system in Leviticus 1-7 which is also a foreshadow of the death of Jesus. All the animals that were brought before God as a sacrifice was to atone for the sins of the people. Christ's death on the cross atoned for the sins of those who believe on Him. He covers our shame with His blood. What is amazing is this is a one time deal when we come to Christ, we are made righteous in the sight of God yet while still continuing to struggle with sin. I find interesting that God provided the sacrifice for the skins right after He told the serpent:
And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel (Genesis 3:15, NASB)
If you recall, this is the first promise of the Messiah in the Bible and yet God shows us that promise will come and illustrate that, he provides an innocent animal to be sacrifice just so Adam and Eve can cover their nakedness.
Christians rejoice that God loves and care for us in spite of our sin and that God fulfilled His promise to send Jesus to die in our place for our sins on the cross so we can have fellowship with the Father.
