Do You Hope To Get A Blessing?

How many of you ever attended a church that made announcement about a special service that will take place and the one making the announcements says, "You will get a blessing out of this." I am sure many of you have. I know I have as well. Too many times, Christians focus on what they will hope to get some blessing from God because they attended church or did some service for Him.

When Jacob wrestled with God, he said he will not give up unless He blesses him (Genesis 32:26), which is where I think many of us come to God with the same request when we serve Him or go to a worship service. A lot of times we focus on what we get out of a worship service more than what we give. Yes, we do hope for God to speak to us through His word which should be the prayer of all His saints when they attend a worship service. Remember we are there to join our voices in unison all that God has given and praise Him for giving us Jesus.

The Psalmist wrote:

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
bless his holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits,
who forgives all your iniquity,
who heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit,
who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
who satisfies you with good
so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's (Psalm 103:1-5)

This Psalm is praising God for what He has done and forget His benefits. Worship is not about God blessing us, but us, His people, blessing Him with our worship. He does not need our worship as if he needed some form of self-esteem, but He demands our praise because He is the creator and sustainer of our lives. It is like saying "Thank You" to someone who deserves thanks. Worship is giving God glory because He deserves it. We do not deserve anything in worship. Worship is not about you.
