There will always be debates among Christians and atheists until the return of Christ. Some will be successful while others will be frustrating. Imagine you had the chance to respond to someone who is an atheist through a series of letters on how great Jesus truly is. This is what David Robertson has done in his book, Magnificent Obsession.
Robertson has written a book back in 2007 called, The Dawkins Letters, which is a response to Richard Dawkins' book, The God Delusion. This time, Robertson is basing his response to the late Christopher Hutchens' book, God is Not Great as well as a response to an atheist at a Scottish university who happens to be the leader of an atheist society. This man admits to Robertson, "Okay...you have destroyed my atheism. but what do you believe?" (pg. 13), which is fair question to ask from any non-believer. 1 Peter 3:15 tells us to always be ready to give an answer for the hope we have but do it with gentleness and respect.
Robertson address what he believes about Jesus Christ through a series of letter to man named "J", who is not a real individual, but "rather a conflation of many of the people whom I have had coffee with, corresponding with or just generally chatted with about these things" (pg. 14). Each chapter is an defense on who Jesus is and how Scripture supports the claims as well as sources outside the Bible. These chapters deal with Jesus being fully man, a messenger from God, who performed miracles, and one day is coming back again. At the end of the book, Robertson has a challenge for the readers. That challenge is to be ready to make a defense for the gospel. He gives several resources to read and study as well as book to stay away from that are not helpful.
If you have ever read a blog post with an open letter entry, that is what you get when you read this book. It would make a great dialogue for Christians to use to a non-believer as well using references from it when debating on Christianity. It would even make a great small group discussion in the church.
Thanks Christian Focus for letting me review this book.
