For the past couple of weeks, churches in our area have been advertising their egg hunts. Some are very simple where you show up and let the kids loose. Others, will use some gimmick that will draw a lot of attention to their egg hunt. For example, one church in particular will use a helicopter to drop eggs and candy from the sky.
Some churches will have egg hunts while others will not. Those that don't have egg hunts starts attacking those that do saying you are glorifying the Easter Bunny and not Jesus. So, the question of the day is should churches have Easter egg hunts? I think the more appropriate question is why should you have an egg hunt?
Are you having an egg hunt like a Halloween alternative where is there is little gospel and the kids are having a good time. Are you having an egg hunt to promote the gospel or showing people how cool your church is? Granted some churches will tell people about their Easter service but the problem is they may not make to your church on Sunday or any church. Parents may be there so the kids can get out of the house and free candy in the process.
This is an opportunity for a church to share the gospel with people who will not be in church on Easter. Now I know Easter is where a lot of people come to attend church, but some of those churches have never presented the gospel because they are preaching on something else. Should a church have an egg hunt? Depends on their motivation for it.
