Book Review: Family Worship by Donald Whitney

When we think of the phrase, "we worship God as a family," we think of going to church together as a family. Is there anything wrong with that? No. It is encouraging to see families coming in together to worship God especially when one of the kids is driving.

We normally don't think about worshipping God as a family within the walls of our own house. We pray at meal times, but that is as far as it goes. The idea of worshipping as a family is foreign to a lot of Christians and for others it is a struggle.

Donald Whitney has written a fantastic book called Family Worship, which serves as an introduction to worshipping as a family. Whitney wrote:

The Bible clearly implies that God deserves to be worshiped daily in our homes by our families. The beloved Bible commentator Matthew Henry knew this when he said, “The way of family worship is a good old way, no new thing, but the ancient usage of the saints.” That statement is true not only of the saints (that is, the believers) in the Bible but has been true of God’s people ever since.

This phrase was written following Biblical examples of family worship.

He also wrote about the history of family worship, what goes with family worship, and when is the best time to begin. Family worship can be a struggle, as I mentioned earlier, for some Christians. It is probably we don't understand it properly. Also it may have never been taught in the church they attend. I can never remember a time when the church I attended as a teenager had a special series dedicated to family worship.

I am delighted to recommend this book by Donald Whitney not just for those who have been doing family worship, but for those who want to begin.

Thanks Crossway for letting me review this book.
