One of the things that most Progressive Christians believe is that Jesus commissioned women to preach when He was resurrected. In Matthew 28, we see that Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to where Jesus was buried than a great earthquake happened, and the stone was rolled away. Then two angels appeared proclaiming that Christ has risen. They were instructed to tell His disciples all that has happened.
As they were running to where the disciples were, Jesus appeared to them:
And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of His feet and worshiped Him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and report to My brothers to leave for Galilee, and there they will see Me.” (Matthew 28:9-10).
Notice that Jesus said to the women to "go and report to My brothers." This is where a lot of egalitarians think that Jesus commissioned women to preach just because He told the women to go and report to the disciples. Is reporting something important the same as preaching? Let's go a little further,
In Matthew 4, Jesus begins his public ministry, and the Bible tells us:
From that time Jesus began to preach and say, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 4:17).
In this passage, the original Greek word for preach means "to be a herald, to proclaim." In the Matthew 28 passage, the original Greek word for report means "announce, declare." While they may seem similar, they are not the same. If reporting means the same thing as preaching, then those 24-hour news channels are men and women preaching as us non-stop.
Having someone give a report is not the same as preaching. Parents, have you had your kids go tell your spouse, your other children, or anyone in the house something important? Do we call that preaching? When someone give announcements at church, I do not recall it being the same as preaching.
Did Jesus commission women to preach? No.
