Book Review: The Pastor as Leader by John Currie

Many are confused as the role of the pastor. Even those inside the church which is sad because most Christians knew the pastor was not the main preaching man, but he was also the shepherd for that particular church.

There are even some pastors who are discouraged by not knowing if they are supposed to be more of a preacher or more of a leader. A church needs a pastor who is both a leader and a preacher. John Currie addresses that in his book, The Pastor as Leader.

Currie divides this book into two parts. The first half of the book look at the pastor as a man. The pastor is a man who is on mission, he is united with Christ, and full of the Holy Spirit. Currie goes on to say that a pastor leads by preaching which to many is foolish but that is how God governs us through the means of words. Currie address that a pastor is on of Christlike character which we have the qualifications for a pastor in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1.

The second half of the book deals with the duties of the pastor. The first one Currie addresses is a pastor is a man on his knees in prayer. This is something you would not see in majority of leadership books because most of them deal with pragmatic methods rather than biblical ones. Once again Currie addresses the pastor as a man who leads by preaching. A pastor who wants to lead his church well, must make preaching a priority. Currie continues with a pastor is one who gives the church a clear vision based on the Bible of what a church should be and help its members engage in the ministry of the church using their gifts for the glory of God.

This is book is a simple read and can be beneficial for those in pastoral ministry whether he is a seasoned veteran or one that is just beginning his first church.

I received this book from Crossway in exchange for an honest review.
