The God I Never Knew by Robert Morris

The God I Never Knew is written by Robert Morris who is the Senior Pastor of Gateway Church in Dallas, Tx. This book is about the Holy Spirit and what the Bible says about Him and what He does. The book is divided into several parts. The book introduces who the Holy Spirit is, how he came into the picture in Biblical history, the gifts he gives, and how he interacts with believers.

This book almost falls along the line of Francis Chan's Forgotten God, talking about how the Holy Spirit seems to be pushed aside by believers because many Christians do not talk about Him or they are afraid to discuss the Holy Spirit. One thing that was pointed out in the book that one of the jobs of the Holy Spirit is to convict believers and recall all the things Jesus taught us. What was missed in the conviction part of the books is with conviction there comes confession and with confession comes repentance. If we do not repent of the sins we confess, then our confession is worthless. If we say the Holy Spirit makes us convicted of our sins, then what we are communicating is the Holy Spirit's job is to make us feel sorry for the things we have done.

Morris starts discussing the gifts of the Spirit. One thing I am glad that was addressed was that every believer is baptized with the Holy Spirit according to 1 Corinthians 12:13. He went on to discuss the difference between baptism in the Holy Spirit and the ordinance of baptism. We become members of the body of Christ by being baptized in the Spirit. We are baptized by water in obedience to the Scriptures and following the example of Jesus.

This was an interesting book to read. I thought it was not as good as Chan's Forgotten God nor Billy Graham's book on the Holy Spirit.

I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.
