The Tebow Wave
It seems that Tim Tebow is the talk of the sports world. One reason is his amazing season with the Denver Broncos winning 6 straight games since he became the starting quarterback (7-1 overall) and keeps coming back in the 4th quarter of every game. Forget the Green Bay Packers quest for perfection or the Houston Texans not only getting to the playoff for the time time in their history (and having a better record than the Dallas Cowboys), but winning their division with only their third string quarterback in the last couple of weeks along with other injuries. Tebow is the NFL story of the year
The second reason why he is the talk of the sports world is his unquestionable faith in the Lord Jesus. He gives God all the praise both on and off the field. Many people say it is good he has that faith, but there are others who want him to put a lid on it. As a follower of Jesus, I am excited to see a NFL player giving praise to God for all his accomplishments because many would become arrogant saying it was all me.
Many people are riding The Tebow Wave, where people are watching Tebow and cheering for him like he is the next big thing. He is already compared to John Elway, one of my all-time favorite football players, but one thing I am concerned about is how long will The Tebow Wave last.
For one thing, Tim Tebow is human. He will get hurt (God forbid). He is also not perfect. If he falls into sin, you can rest assure the media will be all over that, just ask Mel Gibson and Tiger Woods. Second, Tebow will not be a quarterback forever. He may not even be the starting quarterback his entire career.
Now before you think that I am not a Tebow fan, please hear me out. I know Tebow loves Jesus and plays football to the spread His fame. I love his story of being in his first NFL season and having a career very few could ever dream of. What I am afraid of is are setting Tebow to become the next sports idol. I know he does not want that nor can he prevent people from making him an idol. As Christians, we need to rejoice with our fellow brother and sisters in Christ as Romans 12:15 tells us to. My question is are we setting him to take a fall because we are "worshipping" him. He is worshipping God and giving him praise, but are we guilty of making him a "god?" For example, when the Broncos came from behind again this past Sunday, their kicker made the winning play, but all people could talk about was Tebow.
I know the Tebow wave will continue as along as he is playing well and how the Broncos are playing as well. I pray that Tim Tebow continues to remain humble and enjoys the game of football for the glory of God. I pray people will talk about how much of Jesus he makes so others will realize their need for Jesus.
