God Does Know Your Heart

Perhaps one of the greatest excuses for Christians to get out of anything, going to church, which we know that saying "going to church" is bad theology, giving generously, or witnessing, is when people say "God knows my heart." What does that mean? So because you did not get out of your comfortable bed to get ready for worship and think that because God knows your heart that is okay when the Bible says to neglect meeting together (Hebrews 10:25). You know that show your watching contains a lot of sexual material yet you think it is okay to watch and ask God to forgive you because God knows your heart.

Does God know your heart? The answer is yes. God told Samuel as he is seeking the king to replace Saul and looking after all the older sons of Jesse, "'Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart'" (1 Samuel 16:7). God knows our heart. He knows our motives behind every decision we make. Jerry Bridges said that God knows our motives even we do not know them.

Does this mean, that God looks at our hearts and everything is okay because our hearts are pure? No. I love how the English Standard Version translates Jeremiah 17:9, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?" God gave us our diagnosis. Our heart is sick. Jesus said what comes out of the heart of man in Mark 7:21-23:

For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.

Our hearts are sick and contain evil, which is why we need a Savior. We need to trust Jesus because He knows our hearts. God can save us through the redemptive work of Christ. Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to dwell in our hearts to regenerate us so that we may live as a new man to live a holy and godly life. Does not mean we are perfect.

When we sin, our hearts may start condemning us. 1 John 3:20 says, "for whenever our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything." I love the part that says, "God is greater than our hearts." Our hearts are sick and full of evil which is why we need a Savior. Praise God that Savior is Jesus Christ.
