Book Review: Is It My Fault? by Justin & Lindsey Holcomb

Domestic violence is something that is difficult for many in our culture to talk about. It seems we hear more about in the news whether it is a local business man or a celebrity. It is a struggle for many in the church to talk about because they don't know how to deal with it. There is no ministry in that area and I don't think it is from ignorance.

What exactly is domestic violence and how can we show grace to those who are victims of it? Justin & Lindsey Holcomb have written a book that address domestic violence and show them they have hope. The book is called Is It My Fault? which serves as a sequel to their previous book, Rid of My Disgrace: Hope and Healing for Victims of Sexual Assault.

This book is divided into three parts. The first addresses the issue of domestic violence. The Holcombs define what it is, why men choose to abuse, and what the effects are for the victims of domestic violence. The second part deals with what the Bible says about women and addresses if the grace of God applies to victims of domestic violence. It also deals with the question about suffering. The Holcombs gives Biblical examples of people in the Bible who suffer because of unfair abuse, which leads to the third part of the book. The Holcombs take a look at three Psalms which are prayers for God to deliver them in the midst of their suffering which was from violent enemies.

I have to admit the first part of the book was tough to read, but it was a necessary read. Why was it necessary? I can tell you, it was not for the purpose of review but for the purpose to equip myself to be ready when I encounter someone going through domestic violence and give them the hope of the gospel. Church leaders should have this book. They should also encourage all their leaders to read. This book is a must need for church leaders and anyone involved in ministry.

Thanks Moody Publishers for letting me review this book.
