Book Review: Study Commentary on Acts by Guy Prentiss Waters

The books of Acts has been one of the most studied books in the Bible and quite possibly one of the most preached. I remember the pastor of the church where I had my first Youth Pastor position, preached from it almost every Sunday. Not expositionally but mostly topical and sometimes over the same passage he preached on months ago. Churches go to Acts to see how the Holy Spirit worked through the first century Christians to spread the gospel throughout the world.

Many commentaries have been written on Acts from various authors in various theological camps. Guy Prentiss Waters has taken on the task to write a commentary on Acts for the EP Study Commentary series. Waters is a professor at Reformed Theological Seminary and in teaching elder in the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA).

This commentary has a great basic introduction to the book of Acts. It talks about the date of the book, who wrote it, and anything else you find in a study Bible. This book is over 600 pages that goes through all of Acts verse by verse with points of application at the end of each chapter. One area I do have concern is when I pick up a commentary, the author usually uses a Bible translation then gives his interpretation of the passage. In this commentary, the scripture is based on the author's interpretation then he gives what the passage means. Not saying Waters was stirring the reader away from Biblical doctrine, but a commentary is suppose to help interpret the Bible not one's own interpretation of the Bible.

Overall, this commentary is excellent and will be very useful to anyone who is studying the book of Acts.

Thanks EP Books for letting me review this book.
