The church cannot just go with the flow of the culture, it cannot be merely a part of American civilization. Because the church is created supernaturally by the transformative power of the Holy Spirit, no aspect of the church can ever be reduced simply to a function of human society. Even the civilizational lives of Christians when they are outside the church walls, living out their discipleship in America's homes, workplaces, and communities, are no longer merely civilizational lives. The work I do in my daily life, however dependent it is on American civilization for its cultural form, is now a supernatural discipleship with eternal consequences.
