Book Review: The God You Thought You Knew by Alex McFarland

My favorite of all the Star Trek movies would have to be "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." In the movie, Admiral Kirk, Captain Spock, and Doctor McCoy talked about Project Genesis where it was able to create a inhabitable world from a moon or some lifeless rock in space. McCoy mentions the earth was created in six days according to myth. Right there the movie acknowledged that the earth was created but the Bible was downgraded to a myth.

In our culture, there are a lot of myths regarding Christianity and in particular, God Himself. Our culture has some funny ideas about God whether they came up with it themselves or something they heard in a church that does not teach the Bible faithfully. The same is true regarding Christianity. Our Culture, at times, gives Christians a funny looks because of the myths regarding the faith. Alex McFarland takes 10 myths about Christianity and debunks them in his book, The God You Thought You Knew.

McFarland begins each chapter with the myth then follows it with truth as taught in Scripture or in history depending on the myth. McFarland deals with myths such as Christianity being intolerant and unloving, it has been disproven by science, Christianity is not a religion for the educated, and it can't be real because it does not work for me. Each chapter deals with these myths carefully in a way that it would not seem McFarland is coming across to harsh.

This book is best for the skeptic who believes in some, if not, all of the myths McFarland addresses. This book is also good for college students to equip them as they engage with their classmates and professors.

Thanks Bethany House for letting me review this book.
