In our culture, we have seen the increasing support for same-sex marriage. This past year, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down bans on all 50 states to make gay marriage legal. Two years prior to that, the Supreme Court proclaimed the Defense of Marriage Act's definition of marriage between one man and one woman unconstitutional.
With the increase support of same-sex marriage, has also come the increase of silencing Christians. There have been cases where Christian business owners, such as bakeries and flower shops, are being fined because they refuse to service those in a same-sex wedding. Christians who have called homosexuality a sin are being labeled as bigots and hateful. Sermons that preach the truth of God's Word regarding marriage and sexuality have been, in some circles, labeled as hate speech.
In this increase hostility, one would think that it is time for Christians to run and hide. Some would think that Christians need to be quiet in regards to this matter. Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, has written a book for such a time as this called, We Cannot Be Silent.
Mohler addresses the sexual revolution and how it is affecting our culture as well as the impact of the Christian witness. Some have argued that same-sex marriage marked the end of marriage in our society. Mohler states that is not the case. Divorce, cohabitation, and even advanced reproductive technologies have in contributed to the slide of marriage being redefined in our culture.
Mohler continues on by writing how the homosexual movement began in our culture and how the church is to respond in light of this sexual revolution. The final chapter of the book deals with hard questions that need to be asked in our day and time. Questions such as, Can a person with same-sex attraction change his orientation, Is homosexuality a worse sin that others, and Should the government legislate morality. Mohler deals with all the questions in the chapter carefully and Biblically.
This year there have a number of books that have come to address issues in our day and time including ones regarding same-sex marriage and speaking the truth in love. This book is one of those that every Christian whether they are in a church leadership position or a owner of a business should read and discuss with their brothers and sisters in Christ.
Thanks Booklook Bloggers for letting me review this book.
