A.W. Tozer is one theologian that Christians regardless of school of theology can agree is a solid teacher of the word of God. His books are still read to this day and some are required reading for some Christian school. I remember picking up The Pursuit of God and could not put it down. On Twitter, there was a hashtag, "TozerTuesday," where people would post their favorite quote by Tozer himself.
If there was one book that made Tozer a household name, it was The Knowledge of the Holy, which was a short, straightforward book on the character of God. Many would say, if there is one book Christian need to read by Tozer, it would be that one and I tend to agree. Bethany House has released a never-before published book that was meant to serve as a follow-up to The Knowledge of the Holy, called, Delighting in God.
The chapters of the book were a collection of sermons Tozer preached following his famous book. Tozer said when we find a man of God, will also see a passion in that man that is beyond control. We were created to delight in God.
Tozer talks about theology where he stress the point of theology is to know God. Theology is the study of God. He also said the one place where we get the main source of our theology is the Bible. Tozer also addresses our worship is filled with more entertainment than awe as if he was looking through some door into the future and see that issue today.
Tozer goes on to address our relationship to God in the perception we have with the church. The church is not a business even though we have "business meetings." The church is the people of God gather together to worship God. He also wrote about preaching Christ because Christ is enough.
Almost every chapter has the word perception in it. How we see God is through the lens of the Bible is how we see everything else which includes His grace, the church, His mercy, and even our fellowship with God Himself. Each chapter ends with a hymn that goes hand-in-hand with what is being written.
I am grateful that Bethany House took the time to publish this book. If you are a Tozer fan, this book is for you. If you have never read Tozer, read Knowledge of the Holy first then read this book afterward.
Thanks Bethany House for letting me review this book.
