Book Review: Worship and the World to Come by Glenn Packiam

Some of you may have heard of Glenn Packiam. He is a songwriter of various worship songs such as "Your Name" and "Mystery of Faith." He was featured in Sovereign Grace's 30th Anniversary album singing "I Stand In Awe." Packiam is now an associate pastor and a seminary professor. He has written a few books which his latest on deals with a topic he is most familiar with: worship. The book is titled, Worship and the World to Come.

This book is a study of contemporary worship as it relates to hope. Christians are known as a singing people who sing about hope. Our hope is that we have been redeemed by Christ and became a new creation. We also sing that our hope is not in this present world. We have a hope that is secured and can never be taken away from us.

Packiam dives into what is practical theology which is not an exhaustive study on the subject. He goes into the different models of contemporary worship in the church and why churches uses it. It is very interesting because it seems from my point of view based on this book that the purpose of contemporary worship is be basically emotional and for the purpose of drawing people into the church.

As stated earlier, this book deals with hope in the area of contemporary worship. Packiam does dive into what is the hope for those who are Christians. Then he goes onto how worship connects us to that hope as we sing to the Lord.

To be honest, I guess I was not expecting this book to be a case study for contemporary worship. I was expecting this to be more on the subject of worship. Not saying this book was not interesting. It does have some good information regarding worship as it relates to hope.

Disclaimer: I received this book from InterVarsity Press in exchange for a review.
