Scougal on Humility

C.S. Lewis once said, Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less. Make not be the most forward definition of humility, but it does get the point across that we are not make the most of ourselves. The Bible says God gives grace to the humble and we are humble ourselves before the Lord (James 4:6, 10), but we cannot comprehend what humility is. We know what pride is, when we think we are the center of the universe, but humility is hard to swallow at times.

I like this definition of humility from Henry Scougal, found in his book, The Life of God in the Soul of Man:

Humility is a sense of our own nothingness, along with a hearty and affectionate acknowledgment of our indebtedness to God’s divine goodness. Humility leads to willing submission to God and a disdain for the vainglory of this world and the empty applause of men.

Humility takes our eyes off ourselves and turn them toward God. Humility helps us be obedient to God in response for what He has done.
