Why Did Jesus Come In The Flesh-To Fulfill The Old Testament

The Old Testament has 613 commands that God expected everyone to obey. James 2:10 says, if you break just one law, you are a law breaker. None of us can keep the law of God because we have inherited our sin nature from Adam and we want to do things our way and not God's way.

In order for us to be truly reconciled to God, we had to perfectly obey the law of God. If Adam and Eve could not be keep the one law God gave them in the garden of Eden, what makes us think we can keep 613 commandments. So comes in Jesus who was born of a virgin, son of a carpenter, and now beginning a three year ministry to promote the kingdom of God. In Matthew 5, He preaches one of the most powerful sermons in history, the sermon on the mount. He said this concerning Himself and the Old Testament:

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them (Matthew 5:17)

The Old Testament points to a Savior who can do we could not do and that was perfectly obey the Old Testament law. Think about it, have you ever placed anything above God? If you have done that, you are an idolater. Have you ever wanted something from your neighbors house that you wished you had? If you have done that, you have broken the tenth commandment. Have ever worn clothing of two different materials? If you have, then you disobeyed Leviticus 19:19. So if your favorite shirt is not 100% cotton, you're in trouble.

Can you truly get the law of God? No. Many who think they get to heaven by being perfect, here is what you need to: Obey the 613 commandments of the Old Testament Law plus one we might have missed so you can be more perfect than Jesus. The truth is, you can not be more perfect than Jesus. Why? You are fully human. Jesus is fully human and fully God. He is the Savior who fulfilled the Old Testament Law. That is why we need Him to be right with God.

This Christmas as you adore Christ the Lord, remember He lived a perfect life on your behalf:

For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life (Romans 5:10)
