Many people think there three wise men when they saw Jesus in Bethlehem. The truth is we do not know how many. The reason why we think three was because of the three gifts they gave Jesus. Here is a good question, why three gifts. A study note from the ESV Study Bible gives us a interesting way of looking at these three gifts as we may never have before:
Frankincense is resin used ceremonially for the only incense permitted on the altar (Ex. 30:9, 34–38). Myrrh is sap used in incense and perfume and as a stimulant tonic. The gifts were likely used providentially to support the family in their flight to Egypt (Matt. 2:13–15).
