On John Piper's 70th Birthday

Today, John Piper turns 70-years-old. He is a beloved theologian, pastor, and author. To many, he is one of the ones who got them started in studying reformed theology.

The first time I heard John Piper was at the 1998 Passion Conference in Austin, Tx. Had no clue who this guy was. I know the preaching was different for me. In fact, I thought he was presenting God as arrogant at the time. Thankfully, I got to hear that sermon again and was wrong. He was not presenting God as an arrogant, divine being, but as a glorious, beautiful God.

My Baptist Student Ministry (BSM) director recommended Desiring God to all everyone so I got a copy in the summer of 1998 and thought Piper was a better writer than preacher at the time. I praise God that my mind has changed a lot about John Piper. As I think about him turning 70 today, I praise the Lord for a man who still has the conviction of presenting God as glorious as He through the pages of the Bible. I praise God that John Piper has not watered down the message of the gospel or even tone it down.

Today, I would like to share those two messages John Piper preached on from Passion 1998:

Did Christ Die for Us or for God?

God Is Glorified in Us When Christ Is Gain to Us

Not only did I mention John Piper was a beloved pastor, he is also a popular author and has written many books over the years. Here are my top 5 books by John Piper:

1. Finally Alive

2. Desiring God

3. Five Points

4. Fifty Reasons Why Jesus Came To Die

5. The Pleasures of God

Father, I thank you for John Piper. I pray you will continue to bless his life. I pray he continues in the race and finished well. Amen
