Today is the day where Americans celebrate our independence as a nation. For over 200 years, men and women have fought for our freedom and we are grateful. Of course with the current trends in our country, many are wondering if those freedoms are being taken away. Some want the same freedoms are others while limited the freedoms others have.
Even though this nation is going on a downward spiral, I am thankful for it. What I am also thankful for a true freedom I have in Christ that can never be taken away. Laws in nations can and will change, but God's word never changes.
My true freedom is not found in being a citizen of the United States. My true freedom is found in Christ because He has set me free. The freedom that has been fought and is continuing to be fought won't last for all eternity. The freedom that Jesus died for will last forever.
Jesus said if the Son has set us free, we are free (John 8:36). Paul said, "For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery" (Galatians 5:1). We are free from the condemnation of the law. We are free from our performance. The only performance that makes us free is what Christ did on our behalf. He lived the perfect live we could not live and died the death we deserved.
Christians, as you shoot the fireworks, fire up the grill, or whatever you do this Fourth of July, remember the cross. The cross is where true freedom for the Christian rests in. If Jesus did not die on the cross for our sins, we would have never known the true freedom God offers through the gospel.
