Book Review: Choosing Donald Trump by Stephen Mansfield

The 2016 Presidential Election was one of the wildest rides our nation has ever experienced. We had the first female candidate in Hillary Clinton. We had a candidate known for not being afraid to say, or tweet, anything that comes to his mind, Donald Trump. Many were watching the results coming in and our nation was in shock. The exit polls were wrong. Many, including myself, thought Hillary Clinton was going to win, but it ended up with Donald Trump winning the election.

Many are wondering how did this happened. Clinton is not sure, even though she wrote a book about it. Many in our country are wondering why did evangelicals voted for Trump when there were a few Christian leaders that spoke out against him. Stephen Mansfield has written a book that looks at why some Christians supports Trump and how he got their votes. The book is titled, Choosing Donald Trump.

Mansfield has written books on the faith of our last two presidents, George W Bush and Barack Obama. In this book, he does look at the religious background of Donald Trump. For many Christian conservatives this is an important story. When a man in politics has a faith story, they usually vote for that person, which could be one of the reasons Trump has the evangelical votes.

Mansfield looks at what Trump promised during the election, which drew a lot of evangelicals because he was going to defend faith in America. Mansfield also addressed the lack of trust regarding Hillary Clinton and the eight years of the Obama administration could have contributed to the voted Trump had received. Because of her stance on many issues and the lack of trust many Americans had with her, 81% of evangelicals voted for Donald Trump which is more than the previous three Republican candidates.

This book is not a biography of any sorts but just an observation of an event that many people seem to cannot get their minds around nearly one year later.

Thanks Baker Books for letting me review this book.
