What Should We Remind Our Families During Christmas

As Christmas day approaches, I am sure there are families who are excited about having some time off from work and/or getting to spend time with loved one. If you have kids, regardless of age, I bet they are excited about the presents under the tree.

In my family on Christmas day, I would read either from Matthew or Luke about the birth of Christ and remind everyone that Christmas is not about us or the presents, its about Christ. There are many things we need to remind our families as well as ourselves during Christmas. Here are just a few:

1. December 25 may not have been the day Jesus was born. We may know the exact day, but odds are Jesus was not born on December 25. This is just a day we have set aside to remember his birth.

2. Christ never commanded us to remember His birth, only His death. If you haven't notice, people like to be reminded when someone was born on that day. Many don't want to remember the day that person died. For Christ, we may not know the exact date, but we do remember He was born of a virgin as told in the Bible. Jesus also told us He was going to die and He did, but He also said He would rise again. While we are not commanded to remember Christ's birth, we do because the gift of Jesus being God in flesh was the greatest gift of all.

3. Gifts are great, but we must remember to be generous. As Acts 20:35 says, "It is more blessed to give than to receive." While getting gifts is great, we must remember to be a giver just as our Heavenly Father is, who gives good gifts to His children.

4. Jesus came as a baby, but He will not return that way. This season of advent should be a time where we reflect on the Lord's first coming while remembering the promise of His second coming. Christ will return not as a baby, but as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
