Book Review: Being A Christian by Jason K Allen

What does it mean to be a Christian? Most people in the church will say, "Accept Jesus into your heart." Okay, that is one way to express that you become a Christian, even though there is nothing in the Bible about asking Jesus into your heart, but what does it mean to be a Christian after you get saved? Sadly, many in the church do not know the answer to this question. Many Christians think the gospel is for unbelievers, which is true, but many don't realize the gospel is for believers as well.

Jason K Allen addresses applying the gospel in your everyday life in his latest book, Being A Christian. Allen beings his book with a simple explanation on what is the gospel followed by how every Christian has a past and Jesus came to save us. I think this is a very important issue to stress because many will look at maturing Christians and think they have it all together and they were not bad people that Jesus just made better. All of us, regardless of what our background is has a past and Jesus redeemed us.

Allen takes time to go over in the rest of the book on how Jesus has redeemed every area of lives. Our marriage is a reflection of Christ's love for the church and He died for her. Our families should be a showcase of the gospel where we know all our faults yet we still love another and showcase Christ. Allen writes a chapter on how the gospel applies to our time and how we need to remember to use our time wisely.

Allen continues to discuss the gospel in relation to our recreation which I was a little surprised by this one. I have not read many books that deal with recreation while walking with Jesus. We give God glory in everything we including our time where we play whether with our kids or with friends in a game of pool. The gospel also applies to how we handle our finances and our jobs. God gave work before the Fall, and due to the Fall, work became harder. Yes, we still have to work, but if we are redeemed by Christ, it should strive us to do the best job we can for His glory.

Allen's book is breath of fresh air. I originally thought this would be a book for new believers, which I recommend it for them, but this is a book for maturing believers as well.
