Book Review: The War of Words by David De Bruyn

Words matter. Words have different meanings. There are times when we use certain words, we have to define them.

As words keep taking on new meanings in our day, Christians need to do their best to define the words they use especially in a biblical worldview. In his latest book, The War of Words, David De Bruyn, pastor of New Covenant Baptist Church in Johannesburg, South Africa, contends there are 10 words that believers in Christ must fight for.

The 10 words that De Bruyn mentions, which he takes a chapter to explain each one, are:

1. Authentic

2. Authority

3. Culture

4. Emotion

5. Equality

6. Freedom

7. Hate

8. Relevance

9. Taste

10. Tolerance

De Bruyn takes each word and applies what they mean in light of Biblical truth. For the sake of time, I am going to address one of the words, which is the timing is perfect considering what was mentioned in the latest ad from "He Gets Us."

In chapter seven, De Bruyn addresses the word, "Hate." Some will wonder why this word is a word that Christians really need to define. Because this word has been misused depending on the context. De Bruyn wrote that hate is the only sin the left recognizes. Is it a sin to hate? Once again, depends on the context because there are things God has commanded us to hate. We are to hate injustice, as God has defined it, and we are to hate our sin.  There are things that God does hate as Proverbs 6:16-19 says and, as De Bruyn puts it, "People who love what God loves are told to hate what He hates, which includes those who hate Him (Proverbs 8:13; Psalm 139:21-22)."

As I mentioned earlier, words matter, and we need to define them. We need to know them from a Biblical worldview which De Bruyn does a good job doing that in his book.

I received this book from G3 Press in exchange for an honest review.
