What the Bible Teaches about Sexuality and Identity?

The issue of sexuality and identity has been a hot topic in the church for the past few years. There has been great debate if one's sexual orientation is a sin or is something God has created in them. In this video, Costi Hinn interviews Owen Strachan and Gavin Peacock about these controversial topics and more:

Book Review: Holy Sexuality and the Gospel by Christopher Yuan

As far as I can remember when I became a Christian, the issue of sex and sexuality has also be a hot topic. Most sermons I heard on the subject was on why Christians should not have premarital sex and that was the end of it. Now a days, the talk in our churches have gone from sex within marriage to why God's standard of sexuality is pure and acceptable in one man, one woman covenant marriage relationship.

Christopher Yuan takes a look at God's standard of sexuality, the meaning of marriage, and this applies to the gospel in his latest book, Holy Sexuality and the Gospel. Yuan introduces his own story of how God transformed him and helped him embrace the Biblical view of sexuality, which you see more about in his first book, Out of a Far Country: A Gay Son's Journey to God. A Broken Mother's Search for Hope, which he co-wrote with his mother, Angela. Yuan shows us that we are God's image bearers who reflect the image of God. God's image bearers are the ones who desire to showcase God in everything they do and everything they are.

Yuan wrote that the image of God is essential to understanding what human sexuality is and who we are as human beings. Yuan stresses that the image of God is show who His image bearers who are male and female which brings us the issue of gender. The Bible shows only two genders, male and female who are created in the image of God. Regarding the issue of same-sex attraction, Yuan addresses it with grace and truth without coming across as one who is condemning those struggling with it. He does say there is nothing innocent about this temptation. He wrote that same-sex desires are not to played with. They should be resisted and mortified which is sexual immorality of all kinds should be put to death as Colossians 3:5 tells us.

In the issue of marriage, Yuan warns that can be used as an idol if one is not careful. Marriage is an expression of love, however, Yuan wrote, that highest ideal of love is God Himself. Marriage was given to us by God and should be used in service to our spouse. Marriage is a reflection of Christ's love for the church. Yuan then addresses the theology of marriage which is more than a man and woman saying, "I do" on their wedding day. It is a covenant between a man and a woman to remain faithful to each other and marriage is when a man and a woman become one flesh.

Yuan does address the issue of singleness. Many may think singleness are some form of taboo. Many singles feel they must be outside of God's will because they are not married. Nothing could be further from the truth. Singleness is a gift from the Lord. Singles will be able to have more time to serve and do things for the Lord, not that married people don't already. Some even choose singleness for various reasons. For some singles, it is not forever. If you are single, do not give up on your desire to marry, but use this time wisely.

Yuan tackles some tough issues in this book and does them with clarity. He speaks the truth in love without pointing an accusing finger. He always points back to Jesus and does not compromise the Bible.

Talking To Your Kids About Sexual Sin

Whether we want to admit it or not, our sexual sin is all around our culture. It is in our TV shows, movies, music, and even in the magazines at the checkout line. It is also in our mobile devices. If we are not careful, our kids could stumble onto to site or app that they have no business being in.

The church a lot of times has been embarrassed about sex while the culture seems to not blush at any sexual content. The Bible is clear about sexuality and what God desires for His children in the area of sex. Parents, it is our job to discuss with our kids about not only God's design for sex but also for sexual sin. How do we do that?

Let me begin by saying the conversation must be age appropriate. You are not going to say things to a teenager that you would not say to an 8-year-old. This is where discernment comes in and seeking the Lord as you begin talking about sexual sin to your kids. Do not wait till their teenagers. Begin right now and ask the Lord for wisdom as you begin addressing this issue to your children.

As you begin talking with your kids about sexual sin, it is good that you show them what God desires for sex and have them ask questions. Be honest with your kids. I don't recommend dads talking with their daughters because that would become awkward so mom needs to step in. If you are a single dad raising your kids, find a mature sister in Christ that you can confide in that is willing to address these issues with your daughter(s) and the same thing for single moms with their sons, which in this case, maybe one of the elders.

What if you child is engaged in sexual sin? This is probably one of the biggest fears for Christian parents. Many parents have an idea on to handle this issue but to when it happens, they do the exact opposite. The first thing that we should not do if our child has been engaged in sexual sin is not go to them with guns a blazing. Do not march into their bedroom like a maniac because that will cause them to not be open and honest with even though trust has been broken at this point. We must approach our kids with gentleness and confront their sin in grace and truth. It may not be easy but this is the best way for your child to open up about the sin they have committed.

Next, even though they have committed sexual sin, remind them of the gospel. Remind them that God still loves them and has not abandoned them. Yes, there will be discipline, but God discipline those he loves. Parents, remind your kids how much you love them and they are still your child.

I know there are a lot of scenarios when it comes to our kids in dealing with sexual sin that would take a long time to write them. I hope to write more on this topic in the near future. The one thing to remember when addressing sexual sin is God's Word shows us His design for sex. He is the One who created it. He was not embarrassed about it and neither should His children. Parents, do not be afraid to talk about sex with your kids.

Book Review: Sex In A Broken World by Paul Tripp

Sex is a gift that God has given to man and woman in the context of marriage yet the world doesn't see it that way. Throughout history, sex has been distorted and abused. Even people in the church get it wrong. Sex is a beautiful thing yet has suffered mistreatment due to the Fall.

Paul Tripp in his book, Sex In A Broken World, writes that Christians will face temptation when it comes to sex in this life. Yet, Christians can rejoice because we have a High Priest who hears us and sympathizes with our weakness. God will provide grace for us as continue to live our life in the body and face these temptations.

Tripp also dives into our culture's view of sex through various stories of people he has encountered. These people believe the lie that sex is pure satisfaction if you seek to please yourself and it will not hurt anyone else. The truth is it will hurt those around you and will eventually hurt you. Tripp also writes that the gospel helps us to be sex-wise. The Bible says flee sexual immorality yet our flesh will fight it everyday. The gospel shows us that God will change our hearts to follow him and say no to ungodly desires.

The rest of the book deals with putting sex back in the right context and that is the way God designed it. Sex should also be an expression of worship where we praise God for the husband/wife He has given us. Sex isn't about you, it is about God and glorifying him.

Paul Tripp takes the controversial topic of sex and presents a gospel-centered picture of what the Bible says it is. Yes, this world will distort it and we will face temptation, yet we should not lose heart. The Bible promises that God will provide a way of escape when we face temptation. The Bible also says that the world's desires will fade away including its distorted view of sex.

Book Review: We Cannot Be Silent by Albert Mohler

In our culture, we have seen the increasing support for same-sex marriage. This past year, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down bans on all 50 states to make gay marriage legal. Two years prior to that, the Supreme Court proclaimed the Defense of Marriage Act's definition of marriage between one man and one woman unconstitutional.

With the increase support of same-sex marriage, has also come the increase of silencing Christians. There have been cases where Christian business owners, such as bakeries and flower shops, are being fined because they refuse to service those in a same-sex wedding. Christians who have called homosexuality a sin are being labeled as bigots and hateful. Sermons that preach the truth of God's Word regarding marriage and sexuality have been, in some circles, labeled as hate speech.

In this increase hostility, one would think that it is time for Christians to run and hide. Some would think that Christians need to be quiet in regards to this matter. Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, has written a book for such a time as this called, We Cannot Be Silent.

Mohler addresses the sexual revolution and how it is affecting our culture as well as the impact of the Christian witness. Some have argued that same-sex marriage marked the end of marriage in our society. Mohler states that is not the case. Divorce, cohabitation, and even advanced reproductive technologies have in contributed to the slide of marriage being redefined in our culture.

Mohler continues on by writing how the homosexual movement began in our culture and how the church is to respond in light of this sexual revolution. The final chapter of the book deals with hard questions that need to be asked in our day and time. Questions such as, Can a person with same-sex attraction change his orientation, Is homosexuality a worse sin that others, and Should the government legislate morality. Mohler deals with all the questions in the chapter carefully and Biblically.

This year there have a number of books that have come to address issues in our day and time including ones regarding same-sex marriage and speaking the truth in love. This book is one of those that every Christian whether they are in a church leadership position or a owner of a business should read and discuss with their brothers and sisters in Christ.
